How do I manage free samples or products with no charge?
When you want to provide a free product or sample to a customer, we recommend adding the item directly to a standard quote or sales order with a 100% discount.
This method saves you from having to create special product codes and lets you add any other items the customer is purchasing in the same transaction as the free sample.
Free items won't affect the final invoice total as they're excluded from the total calculation, and your customer can still see the original price and the amount they're saving.
Here's an example of entering a free sample to a sales order. It may also be helpful to add a note like "Free sample" to the product line as shown.
You can run reports to track all samples or free products given during any period. These reports show which customers received free products, which products were given, and the original (pre-discount) value of those products.
To run a report:
- Go to Reports. Select Sales reports, then Invoice details report.
- Click 100% discount/samples only.
